Alejandro, Rômulo here (the guy that have bought your X100)! How are you doing? Nice pictures! I was wondering how easy is working with the RX1… Are you having good times with the camera? Thank you!
Hi Romulo, the RX1 is quite similar to working with the x100 in a sense that it slows you down, but sadly feels like shooting a high tech computer, the X100 felt like shooting a camera… Is not a bad experience, but at least to me, not the same feeling. with the X100 you kind of forgot of the camera when shooting, with the RX1 you are quite aware. Honestly if it wasn’t for the image quality I will have gotten the X100s instead. The x100 had great image, and it seems that the x100s as well, but definitely the full frame in the RX1 is a step ahead. Almost as the D800 sensor.
Here is how I been shooting, it works fine for me and after a while it becomes automatic, but you will see why it is like shooting a high tech device.
In low light i shoot in manual mode, (in regards to shooting mode, aperture, speed, manual) with auto iso. This way can increment speed if need and let the camera move the iso up…
In good light conditions i set the camera to aperture mode and auto iso, if I want to shoot at f2.0 and don’t be messin with an external ND filter i set the cam to manual iso and use iso50, this is generally enough to be able to shoot at f2.0 and 1/2000. I have the iso command set on one of the directions on the round dialing pad, so its a fast access for me to change iso settings.
The buttons I have set this way:
AEL: Exposure Lock, (I use to have this set to focus, and the shutter dial to shoot only without focusing, like on my dslr, but i was not getting so good results on regards to the focusing).
C: Manual focus, if I press this button the camera will disable auto focus. Press it back againg will enable auto focus.
Control Wheel:
– Right: drive mode, (multi frame, single shot etc…)
-Down: disable back screen.
-Left: Iso settings.
Focus Mode Dial: set to AF-S.
Autofocus Setting: Center, (but I never use tracking focus functionality).
So basically set exposure with AE, and focus using the shutter dial. If i want to pre focus, I focus using the shutter dial to a specific distance using an object as a reference, and then hit the C button to disable the autofocus mechanism. That way i can shoot without the camera re focusing.
This is how i been shooting and after trying many configurations seems to be the best working for me, sounds complicated but younger easily use to it. And the image quality is a huge step over other cameras.

Yes I bought the EVF, without it, at least in my case the camera will be almost useless for my shooting. Is really nice and bright, but no OVF. I also bought the really right stuff grip + L plate, makes the camera a bit bigger, but much confortable. I have a picture of the camera on one of my post with it.

Hi Mahesh! Thanks for the comments. I like the DF because of the speed of the camera, everything feels in its place. Its responsive and has great high iso quality. It will mainly depend on what you shot, I decided in a DF instead of the a7, because i already had a Sony RX1. The sony had wonderful image quality but was slow to operate and felt like a computer. I read that the a72 is much improved in this regards so it will make it a more diffuclt decision. I only tried the a72 for a brief moment in a store, and it felt wonderful, but still like a computer. Depends on your shooting style and needs. The great thing about the sony is that you can use any kind of lenses. Not only leica.
Hey Alejandro, Really nice work! Love the New Year’s shots. Wondering if you have been using your Leica lenses on the Panasonic S1. I’m really curious about that combination because I have a lot of Leica lenses, but only film bodies. I had an M240, but didn’t really like it. I’ve like the M10, but not sure I want to spend the money on one. Thanks!
Hi John, thanks very much for the comments. Yes I used some m lenses on the S1, Just a few shots, but they dont really work that good. The 24mm elmar and Voigtlander skopar 35mm v2, have quite pronounce smearing at the corners, the Zeiss 35mm 1.4 works much better, but is still far from what you will get on the m, due to sensor design. I also have a 50mm summilux preasph which works okay on the S1 but better on the M. I think if you want to us m lenses is better to get the leica sl. Many people are getting rid of the SL1 to upgrade for SL2 so prices are less expensive… The following album in Flicker has mostly pictures of the S1 with the voigtlander skopar v2 35mm, (only one is with the Zeiss, it says Zeiss in the description)… https://www.flickr.com/photos/malabito/albums/72157712531139002
