Last weekend walking through Cuba Street, in Mexico City, I bumped into a beautiful little barbershop. Even more intriguing was the person working in it.
His name is Manolo, and he has been a barber for more than 50 years, (he is 67 years old). Started working at 17 years in a Barbershop right down the corner and after it closed, at age 55, he decided to open his own business.
A man to admire, he spoke for hours telling me about his life, how his 2 kids were murdered, how he overcome alcoholism, and how at 67, he is healthy and stronger than must 20 years old. He is known by all in the neighbourhood, and within those 2 hours I passed in his barber shop, there wouldn’t be a person passing by that will not raise a hand in signs of respect saying hi!
While talking to Manolo a client, entered, he gladly let me shoot him as well, and for a surprise he had an even harder story. He has been sober for 37 years, no drugs, no alcohol, nothing! Armando, as he called himself, also shared about his life, how he touch bottom and there is where he realized he needed to change or die. Wise words he said, “People need love to change, of course money helps and material things, but at the end it all adds up to love, and thats what helped me”….
Thanks Manolo and Armando for sharing your stories!
